To remain healthy, children need to be active everyday. Here are some simple ways to encourage your child to be active:
- Limit the amount of time that your child watches television, plays video games or uses the computer to no more than 1 hour a day.
- Introduce new games and movements slowly and with patience. Praise your child for trying new activities.
- Get outside — dress children for play in comfortable clothes and shoes they can get dirty.
- Walk together to the local store, library or school whenever possible.
- Make active living a family affair. Share in the fun and get active together.
- Go on active family outings - visit a farm, take in a family skate at the local arena, fly a kite.
-
Get your child involved in activities around the house: carrying the groceries, raking leaves, or shovelling snow.
-
Children need room to move. Make sure your children have safe places inside and outside your home to be active.
-
Be a role model. Emphasize fun rather than competition.
-
Talk about physical activity as an important part of staying healthy. |
