Halton Fresh Food Box

Good food box programs address food access and food insecurity issues. The Halton Good Food Box Steering Committee has established this program in Halton based on the guiding principles of Toronto's FoodShare program.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are purchased using a bulk-buying system, which ensures that the box costs less than the same food purchased at a low cost grocery store. For 2008, the program gratefully acknowledges the support of some key funders including Halton Region, Choices 4 Health, and The Burlington Community Foundation.

Ch4H funds will support costs associated with delivery of the food boxes to neighbourhoods, purchasing plastic packing boxes, volunteer recognition and fruit and vegetable grower consultations.

In November 2004, the Halton Fresh Food Box program started. We packed 162 boxes at St. Christopher’s Anglican Church in Burlington . By November 2007, we distributed 550 boxes through 22 neighbourhood drop sites across Burlington , Oakville , Milton , Georgetown and Acton .

We buy top quality fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers and fruit and vegetable distributors.  Twice a month, volunteers pack the vegetables and fruits into green reusable boxes. The third Tuesday of the month boxes are packed at St. Christopher’s Church in Burlington for delivery in Burlington, Oakville and Milton. While on the fourth Tuesday of the month boxes are packed at the Georgetown Christian Fellowship Church for delivery to Acton and Georgetown neighbourhoods.
